Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners for shops and stores in Kenya

A barcode scanner speeds up checkout, stock-taking and price lookups by reading the code on a product instead of typing it. This collection features SYBLE scanners: two 1D laser handheld models, one wired and one wireless, and two 2D table-mount scanners that also read QR codes.

1D or 2D?

• 1D scanners read the traditional line barcodes found on most retail packaging, such as EAN, UPC, Code 39, Code 93, Code 128 and Codabar.
• 2D scanners read 1D codes plus QR codes and other 2D symbols, useful for mobile payment screens, tickets and vouchers.

Other things to check

• Handheld or table-mount: handhelds suit stockrooms and large items; table-mount scanners are hands-free at a busy counter.
• Wired or wireless: wired is simple and needs no charging; wireless gives freedom of movement.
• Interface: USB is the usual connection to a POS PC; some models offer other interfaces.
• Speed and resolution: the listings quote up to 300 scans per second for the 1D handhelds.

Where they are used

• Supermarkets, mini-marts and pharmacies at the till.
• Warehouses and stores for inventory counts.
• Small businesses that want faster, more accurate billing.

Complete the counter with a thermal printer and thermal rolls.

Laser, CCD and imager engines

• Laser (1D): longest reading distance and low cost, but the beam cannot reliably read codes shown on a phone screen, and the moving mirror is sensitive to drops.
• CCD or linear imager (1D): no moving parts and able to read screens, but with a shorter reading range.
• 2D area imager: reads 1D and 2D codes, including QR, from any orientation, at a higher price.

The retail codes EAN-13 and UPC and the logistics code Code 128 are all 1D, so a 1D scanner reads them. The XB-2055 and XB-5055 in this collection are laser models, so choose the XB-8808H or XB-8602H if customers show codes on phone screens.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 1D scanner read QR codes? No. Choose a 2D model for QR codes.

Do these work with my POS software? USB scanners generally act as a keyboard input, so most POS systems accept them.

Do I need drivers? Check the individual product page.
